Mikulia  2

She touched the soft yellow flower as she watched the dashing man ride off on his white

horse.

“Who was that man?” she wondered silently. He must be a noble or something. That was very

strange because nobles don’t usually approach peasant girls like her. Most of the time,

people of his social standing would either stare at her as they passed like some sort of

carnival attraction, or they would ignore her completely.

With a sigh, she bent and collected the remainder of her earnings and pushed them into one

of the sacks before heading home.

“I’m home!” she shouted upon entering the tiny shack that was her house.

“Mikulia! Back so early?” Her mother asked. The smell of fresh vegetable soup wafted from

the pot her mother was stirring and tickled her nose.

“Yes. You won’t believe what happened today mother!” she said excitedly as she set the

coins on the table with a soft thud. Her mother turned around and her eyes widened at the

sight of all the money.

“M-Mikulia! Where’d you get so much money?”

“I’m about to tell you!” she said breathlessly “I met a very handsome young noble who

bought up all of my flowers. He gave me this money as a gift!”

“Oh my….” Her mother sat down in awe of the gold coins that were spread on the table.

“Where’s Mikael?” she asked her mother. The little boy was always getting into trouble

when he was not within her sight.

“He was out playing in the garden. He came in for a little bit, but then he went back

out.”

She stepped out the back door, and sure enough, there he was, playing in the mud.

“Mikael! You got all muddy!”

He looked up at her sheepishly as he hid his muddy hands behind his back. The little boy

slowly walked over to her and muddied her skirt as he wrapped his arms around her legs.

“Big sis is home.” He said with his face buried in her skirt.
