This has been weighing on my mind for a little while. I see time and time again, people (non MMDers obviously) who bash others who use MMD saying that it is not art and it is "illegal" because it uses someone else's work.

First I would like to address the incorrect notion that it is illegal:
The modelers give the users permission to use their model by making it available for public download. Therefore, it is indeed legal as long as credit is given where credit is due and the terms and conditions of usage are being properly followed.

Secondly, MMD (MikuMikuDance for those of you who aren't familiar with the term, is a 3D posing and rendering freeware that involves usage of 3D models) is art. People put their time and energy into creating beautiful pictures and videos using MMD.

I myself have spent a whole day on one video just making sure that it was perfect and I know others who have done the same as I have. Also, art is a form of expression. MMD is a program that people use to express love, hate, sadness, quirkiness, and all manner of other emotions using their imaginations and the models that have been provided for them.

Restricting art to the simple definition of "something you create using pencil and paper" (used as an example) is very wrong, and ignores that there are other ways of expressing art.

People put their time and hearts (and even sometimes money) in using this program and to degrade it by calling it "artless and illegal" is plain wrong. If you put your heart into it and it's art to you, then the opinions of others do not matter.

This is just how I feel on the subject. MMD is art!

You do realize that all depends on if the model was ripped from another source such as a video game or not right?

It doesn't change the fact whether it's art or not mind.

In fact, truth of the matter is there is only one solid fact about art: Art is subjective.

Everything else is all a matter of opinion. Is something art? That's up for the individual to decide, it is not actually fact in the slightest.

If you are saying this is a fact, you are ultimately doing the exact same thing as they are.
