The definition of R-18 in MMD

Journal Entry: Fri Feb 1, 2013, 4:32 PM
  • Listening to: Lollipop factory
  • Reading: My messages
  • Watching: Vocaloid PVs
  • Playing: nothing
  • Eating: nothing
  • Drinking: water

R-18 literally means Rated 18, as in "for adults 18 and up". This encompasses everything from gory and bloody scenes of death, injury, and killing to pornographic scenes of nudity and sex.

Some of you have had a little trouble with this term, so I put the definition of it first. This term is seen a lot in readmes for many models. Even so, many have gotten confused by this term and end up doing things with the model that are actually not allowed.

For example, with Hetalia models, almost all of them forbid violence, blood, and gore as well as anything related to or depicting sex, but all of that is shoved under  "R-18" and you don't know what that means. There are some of you who do know what that term means and continue to do this, but that is another matter entirely.

Moving away from Hetalia, there is the "hentai" in MMD. Yes, it is true that many of the things used to edit models come from a hentai game, but that's not the point. Putting aside the models made specifically for "R-18" audiences, most of the models forbid hentai. Sometimes, it is specifically stated by the modeler that this is not allowed.

Sometimes, the modelers put beside the term "R-18" that yaoi/yuri is also not allowed. First, let me make sure we are clear on the definitions of these terms:
YAOI is NOT kissing, hugging, and touching, that is called shounen-ai. It is literally unadulterated boy on boy sex.
YURI is the same thing. It is girl on girl sex.
That, ladies and gentlemen, is called PORN.

And that is also tucked neatly under the umbrella of "R-18".

Violence is also included. It's pretty self-explanatory really. Pretty much anything that is gory, bloody, and just plain revolting is usually forbidden. What modeler wants to see their creation covered in blood? Especially in other cultures, such images are a huge taboo.

Basically, R-18 is anything that would warrant an "R" or above rating if it were in a movie.

Now that you know what it means, you should at least endeavor to respect the wishes of the modelers. Do read the readmes, and if you cannot, translate them. Even google translate can help.

If you have doubts about whether or not what you're doing is right, then don't do it, or try to find a way around it. Everything will be better that way. :D

R-18 on MMD? That is disgusting. I thought the creator of MMD forbade that.

Is this a site of Puritan prudes?
Are you all 12yrs old?
Is your education bereft of basic art history?

Please don't ever go to a metropolitan museum, you may be exposed to boobies!

Are you so morally superior to judge what pornography is when the judicial courts can't.

Artists are the first people to complain about censorship, yet you are the censors.
Enjoy SOPA, because you are the very model of despotism.

If you are so chaste as to be offended by nudity then don't look, but don't stop others, that's oppression.

Your "intellectual property" is a cartoon, not a work by a grand master.

If you don't want others to "abuse" or modify your work, keep your narcissism in check and don't post it. Keep it to yourself and refrain from  showing off, boasting and looking for some peer approval.

Don't share so others, who may learn from dissecting your work and will never have the opportunity to surpass you. Instead make a video tutorial showing how smart you are, remember to click fast. It's all about self-love at the expense of the community.

"What modeler wants to see their creation covered in blood? Especially in other cultures, such images are a huge taboo."

To say this you must really have a very limited understanding of sociology, history and art.

You are making up fictitious examples to fit your agenda.

Stay away from Macbeth, Julius CaesarChristianity, Renascence Masters, Robert Mapplethorpe, Frida Kahlo, the Aztecs, Haitians, Egyptians ...

Google "blood images in art history".

I had a great deal of respect for artists, mmd has brought out the worst.

Sorry but it is very rude to make assumptions about people. The reason why r18 material is not allowed with many MMD models is because it was not the original purpose of the model. Many people illegally edit the models without the consent of the modeler to portray erotic scenes and the original modeler doesn't accept that. They have the right to do what they want with their creations. Forgive me, but I am quite sure you do not know them. I bet that they appreciate and admire artistic nudity as much as any artist.
Also, you are arguing ad hominem my good sir or madam, this means that you are making FALSE assumptions about me based on a piece of literature, for I am an artist beyond MMD. I ,in fact, appreciate the classical pieces of art in which the human body is portrayed in a beautiful and meaningful way. I would ask you not to attack my knowledge of culture and the arts based on something as small as a piece of software. Besides, this journal is quite old. You must have  lots of time on your hands to dig this up and and attack me about it. Please at least try to know what you are talking about before you rant on someone for what they say. Thank you and have a nice day.

>Sorry but it is very rude to make assumptions about people.

That's exactly what you were doing, with your pedantic prudish rant.
Who made you the morals police?
It's up to the original artist to litigate "illegal" modifications to his work, not some busybody repeating trite "rules" that are attached to every model file.  If you could read original Japanese, you would know this. You say you do, but are compelled to reiterate it.

If these modifications and immoral situations people put these figures in so egregiously illegal, why don't we hear of court cases and huge monetary  settlements, instead of the proliferation of videos on Youtube?

>you are arguing ad Eminem (sic)

Indeed I am, by stating it's not your place to be pontificating on moral turpitude.
Your perverse sense of prudishness, along with your attitude of moral superiority is ridiculous, all because you took it upon yourself to educate the masses.  The line about "...taboo in certain cultures..." was so completely wrong I could not help myself from laughing out loud.  Assumptions about a person knowing nothing about sociology, cultural studies and art history is not a large step when they say something like that. I did not want anyone to remotely believe this was true in any way.

>Besides, this journal is quite old. You must have  lots of time on your hands to dig this up and and attack me about it.

I'm so new here I'm reading everything to get acquainted with the software and techniques.
When I saw something so unabashedly self serving I had to comment.

I won't waste your time anymore, I'm sure you have much to do with your lawyer filing warrants for unauthorized color changes to your cartoons..

Well I was ranting about hentai in Mmd which is porn in cartoons. Not art. Porn is not art by my definition ,I dont know about you. Creating pornographic images with their models is highly insulting to their creators. If you take issue with that, I'd ask you to take it up individually with the modelers not me. I don't create the rules, they do.
I wasn't trying to be rude okay? I meant hominem. not eminem.I would like you to stop insulting me please. I have done nothing  to you. in fact I have never met you. I will not make assumptions about you because I don't know you so i would ask you not to attack me please.

This issue is at large with other people. Recently there was a huge blow up with several modelers who were upset at their models being stripped naked and posted on the internet. I posted this journal to give my opinion on the matter.

The purpose of journals in the first place is to give opinions, so it doesnt matter if you like it or not. I'm not going to remove this or block you like  coward would.

I am sorry if you think those things about me but i believe that I should make myself heard.

It's one of the first updates I installed when I installed Windows 7. Still unreadable and not because I'm lacking in my Japanese.

Then that means the person posted the link to the particular model without their computer being in Japanese locale.
